Pixie Toys was founded by two wives in Stourbridge, who were looking to earn a bit of extra money, to help with finances. Their husbands were glass manufacturers and initially production was completed on the kitchen table, but as success boomed, it moved to the glass factory. It ran for a short time from 1930 to 1962, with designer Elizabeth Simmonds (Merrythought & Victoria Toy Works), being taken on board, with her taking over the business at the end of the 1930's. This pre-loved, 1950's Vintage Teddy Bear, is a prime example of Elizabeth Simmonds influence. It's the webbed paws of J.K. Farnell, later Merrythought.
He is a 46 cm / 22", fully jointed teddy bear, with a no longer working, tip and tilt growl. He has been sewn from a golden mohair, with a white, wool plush for his inner ears (a trademark), sparkling, two-tone glass, amber eyes and a smart vertical stitched nose, with an inverted Y mouth. His warm wool paws, feature the pre-mentioned, webbing detail, whilst a rare, woven makers label is on his right paw.
This little known piece of British Teddy Bear history, is in fantastic condition for his 70 years, (please see available images), with some expected, worn patches in his coat.
