Founded in 1912 in Nuremberg, Schuco produced mechanical tinplate toys. Later, this was incorporated into mohair and plush teddies, becoming yes/no bears, or highly detailed miniature bears that became something else. Perfume holder, compact mirror or lipstick holder. This pre-loved vintage piece from the 1950's is a bird with movement, who sadly lost his key, so the mechanism could not be tested.
He is a 17 cm L x 5 cm H (6.7"x1.9"), decorative bird. He has been sewn from the finest (at the time) mohair in red, black and taupe and is free standing due to his shaped metal feet, that like all vintage metal items, have lost, some of their original paint. He has metal bead eyes, with a two-part metal beak adding to his appeal and charm, regardless of his wind-up mechanism.
This little piece is in fantastic condition for his 70 years, (please see available images), with some expected, worn chipped paint on his beak.
With new clockwork key
