From 1999, we are lucky to have the 1925 Replica of Monk King. A triumphant crown wearing monkey, who can take a turn on a tricycle, from the artisans at Steiff.
It's always more fun and amusing, to have a toy that does 'something' and that's exactly what this wind-up Monk King on a Tricycle does, courtesy of the Steiff Archives.
Monk King is 19cm /7.5" tall and fully jointed. He has been sewn from the finest white mohair with warm, wool felt peach accents for his face, hands, feet and ears plus a yellow crown decorated with red embroidery for his head (after all … he is a King!). His paws and face have received hand applied, colour shading to define and shape, creating the powerful 'mask' over his eyes. He is attached to a wooden wheeled and metal tricycle, decorated with the Steiff Teddy Bear Head Logo. A turn-key on the side operates the cogs to rotate, giving the appearance that the monkey is actually moving his legs independently. A wonderful animated piece of yesteryear.
