In 1904, in order to prevent forgeries and to promote Steiff as a brand that could be easily recognised and associated with high quality, Franz Steiff, Margaretes nephew, came up with their trademark, Button in the Ear, (the phrase Button in the Ear was also registered in 1904 and patented in 1905). This wonderful Steiff Club Bear for 2004, celebrates the 100th Anniversary of this historical event, with the delightful Franz, lovingly crafted by Steiff.
Franz is 32cm tall and fully jointed. he has been sewn from a luxurious, dense and textured, dark blonde mohair, with contrasting wool felt paws. He has glossy eyes and a black hand stitched nose and mouth, upon his shaved muzzle, giving a joyful and friendly look. Around his neck, upon a satin ribbon is the Steiff Club ceramic medallion for 2004 – Steiff Club Edition 2004. In his paw he holds a wooden handled, brass seal stamp, that features the original Steiff Elephant Trademark, including the incorporated, curved trunk, representative of an S for Steiff. Having such an important part in both Teddy Bear and Steiff history, Franz is a must for most collectors.
This special bear is a Steiff Club Exclusive for 2004 (originally only available to members) and was only manufactured during the year of production – 2004. He comes with his numbered certificate of authenticity and a drawstring bag.
